Nymph

The nymph is a fairy-like female character who appears in the trailer for the upcoming Rayman Origins, a prequel to the entire Rayman series. She has long red hair and wears a pointed hat, skirt and stockings, all of which bear are dark-green with light-green areas. In the trailer for the game, the nymph is shown levitating in a stone circle in the Primordial Forest, a location from the original game. With her hands she gathers rays of moonlight and weaves them into a glowing orb, which solidifies to form Rayman – this is the origin hinted at in Rayman 2. Rayman is intended to preserve the equilibrium of the universe, but unfortunately the newly-created Rayman is immature and has yet to become the hero depicted in the other games. He quickly meets Globox, and sets out on his first adventure. The nymph narrates this entire sequence as though the events depicted in the game occurred long ago. She mentions the presence of other nymphs, but these are never seen.

The nymph is probably Betilla the Fairy, a character from the original Rayman game. The nymph and Betilla bear a strong resemblance: both are levitating females with magical abilities, both have long red hair, and both wear pointed green hats and shoes. Betilla's behaviour towards Rayman in the original game is maternal, which seems to fit with the nymph's role as Rayman's creator. The terms ‘nymph’ and ‘fairy’ are also largely interchangeable. The only inconsistency is that Betilla is limbless, like Rayman, whereas the nymph has limbs; however, Rayman Origins features other redesigned characters from the original game. The Livingstones, limbless in the original, have been redesigned with added limbs in Rayman Origins. Presumably Betilla's design was updated in the same manner, but the trailer does not specifically reveal the nymph's name, so the unity of the two has yet to be officially confirmed.
