Fish make their first appearance in Rayman 1, in the Dream Forest, appearing as large piranhas, who soon become one of the recurring elements of the following games. They jump out of the water and take only one hit to defeat; when this task is done, the piranha's teeth shatter.

Fish make their first appearance in the Dream Forest, the first land in the original Rayman game. Large piranhas leap out of the water and obstruct Rayman's path; these became one of the recurring elements of the series. Rayman can defeat a piranha by delivering a punch with his telescopic fist; this shatters the piranha's teeth and sends it tumbling back into the water.

Fish re-appear in the Caves of Skops, in the Eat at Joe's level. There are three kinds here, all with over-exaggerated facial features: One has a large nose, useful for pushing bouys around, one has lots of teeth, which are very effective at hurting Rayman and the other species has an abundance of hair, which serves no purpose in the level. They do not appear again in the game.
Three more varieties of fish appear in Eat at Joe's, a level in the Caves of Skops, the fifth of the game's six lands. Each of these three varieties of fish bears an exaggerated facial feature: one type has an oversized nose, with which it aids Rayman by nudging buoyant platforms through the water; another type has an oversized cycloptic eye, with which it passively observes the action; and another type has an oversized mouth and teeth, with which it attacks Rayman. These three varieties of fish appear only in the final part of this level, and are not found anywhere else.

Fish appear much more often in Rayman 2 than they did in the original game. The firt time a fish is seen is when Rayman arrives in the Fairy Glade to search for Ly. Several types of fish can be seen in the nearby ponds; these fish are passive, and some bear a slight resemblance to the big-eyed fish from the previous game. Later on in the same level, Rayman must cross a marsh filled with polluted water. Murfy telepathically advises Rayman not to swim in it via a nearby Stone of Thought. The marsh is infested with tiny piranhas. This piranha variety is found in many levels throughout the game; they devour Rayman should he fall into dangerous waters. Large piranhas like those in the original game first re-appear in Whale Bay, where they attempt to eat Carmen the Whale's air bubbles in order to soothe their heartburn.

The large piranhas return once more in Rayman 3, although these ones have mechanical jaws similar to bear-traps. At one point in the Clearleaf Forest, Rayman and Globox must ascend a rushing waterfall whilst being pursued by piranhas. The same type of piranha is enountered again in the Bog of Murk, where they can be punched and defeated by Rayman.

Fish appear in Rayman 2 more often than they did in Rayman 1. The firt time a fish is seen is when Rayman attempts to cross The Fairy Glade in search of Ly. Under the water, several types of fish can be seen. Later on in the Glade, Rayman must cross a marsh full of dirty water. A Stone of Thought is next to it; Murfy's advice is to not swim in it. True enough, the marsh is infested with piranhas. Piranhas are next seen in Whale Bay, trying to eat Carmen the Whale's air bubbles, since they suffer from heartburn. Carmen herself is not strictly a fish, whales are actually mammals.
Another type of fish is encountered in the underwater section of the Land of the Livid Dead. These fish swim passively about and do not react to Rayman's presence.

The piranhas appear twice more in the console version of Rayman 3. At a specific part in Clearleaf Forest, Rayman and Globox must ascend a rushing waterfall whilst avoiding piranhas. Once the duo have reached the top, the piranhas stop attacking.
