‘Grim Keepers are the Hoodlum Army's heavy-forces solution for securing captured areas. Deployed to guard critical points with extreme prejudice, these unpredictable living walls keep an army of tiny creatures called Grims behind their massive shield arms. Trained to explode on contact, Grims will hunt down and dispatch intruders. Grim Keepers also keep a jug of plum juice handy - to drink away the shellshock after losing precious Grims in combat.’ —official description
A Grim Keeper is a type of Hoodlum enemy which appears in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc.
Description
Grim Keepers are noticeably larger than other Hoodlums. Seeming to care almost exclusively for their own protection, Grim Keepers carry a large, impenetrable shield which they carry around in front of them making them difficult to hit. Underneath their robes, the Grim Keepers keep an indefinite number of Grims; hence their name. As the Grim Keepers themselves are unarmed, these Grims are their only means of offense. Every now and then they pull up their robe to allow a single Grim to run free at Rayman. There are only two Grim Keepers in Rayman 3.
A Grim Keeper is playable in the minigame Racket Jump, in which the player competes with another Grim Keeper is a game of tennis. Instead of rackets they use their shields, while the ball is in fact a Molotov cocktail supplied by a Grim.
In an early piece of artwork, a Grim Keeper was shown swinging a mace above its head. Whether this was its original weapon is unclear.
A nameless species of Hoodlum with the wooden shield of a Grim Keeper and the body of a Hoodboom appears in the first part of Hoodlum Hideout and is shown throwing explosive bottles of plum juice at Rayman. This Hoodlum has a very different battle strategy because of its new weapon and needs to be dispatched in a different way. The shield can be destroyed in two shots from Rayman's telescopic fist, afterwards, the helpless Hoodlum carries on throwing Molotov cocktails but needs only one hit to be killed. A similar enemy like this one can be found in the second part of the level. These Hoodlums throw Molotovs like the ones in the previous segment, but unlike the last ones, these carry an inpenetrable metal shield. As they block all of Rayman's shots, a different approach is needed; Rayman must shoot the lower part of the Hoodlum's torso to make it stop blocking its head or to hit the head first, attacking its torso when it is visible. Rayman must hit these Hoodlums twice anywhere in order for them to be defeated.
