Barrel Pirates are a rare and powerful model of Robo-Pirates which appear in all versions of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. They are given greatest prominence in the PlayStation version. They are notable for their difficulty to take down, and first appear in the Whale Bay.

Description

Barrel Pirates resemble oversized barrels with mechanical legs. A pair of eyes can be seen peeking out of a visor on each one. On their tops are mounted electrical cannons, whose projectiles vary depending on which version of the game is being played; in most versions they are unavoidable beams of paralysing electricity, but in the PlayStation version they are damaging electrical orbs. Barrel Pirates are mobile but they are not very manoeuvrable. They can retract into their barrels like tortoises withdrawing into their shells; it is impossible for them to attack or be damaged while in this defensive state, and it also serves as a camouflage in some instances. Barrel Pirates can often be found stomping around hallways and guarding certain Robo-Pirate fortresses.

The Barrel Pirates in the PlayStation version shoot electrical spheres.

Battle strategy

Barrel Pirates are similar to miniature versions of the Boss Biditank – they are formidable, slow-moving, barrel-like enemies which attack via electrical discharges. Though normally they fire poisonous cannonballs similar to a Yellow Henchman 800's projectiles, Barrel Pirates release electrical discharges whenever Rayman gets too close.

Barrel Pirates are powerful enemies, and can prove difficult for Rayman to defeat when confronted directly; however, they are susceptible to ricocheting shots.
