Ubisoft Entertainment (formerly Ubi Soft Entertainment) is a French computer and video game publisher and developer, founded in 1986 by the Guillemot brothers. Ubisoft has published all the games of the Rayman series games, as well as developing most of them internally. The company's first 3D game was Tonic Trouble. Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, joined Ubisoft as a graphic artist at the age of 17, and has worked there since. The company also developed and published his critically acclaimed action-adventure game, Beyond Good & Evil.
History
Ubi Soft Entertainment was founded in 1986 by the five Guillemot brothers, who expanded their business into video game publishing after managing a computer mail-order sales company for two years.
After moderate success in that area, Ubisoft's first major hit was the original Rayman in 1995, released at a time when French games were not as popular as those from Japan and the USA, with the game helping the company become more well-known worldwide. In the following years, Ubisoft expanded its reach with more studios in Annecy, Shanghai, Montreal, and Milan, between 1996 and 1998.
Ever since the Rayman series was created, even more iconic Ubisoft franchises were started, such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Just Dance, and the Rabbids series, the last of which began with the Rayman spin-off Rayman Raving Rabbids.
30th anniversary
For its 30th anniversary in 2016, Ubisoft held a monthly giveaway where Rayman Origins was one of the free gifts given for free on Uplay. In December, it held 30 days of giveaways where Rayman Classic became free and released an animated image of Rayman.
