Rayman Raving Rabbids

Revision as of 18:02, 27 February 2026 by Haruka (talk | contribs) (Manuals: I recently discovered there was a Portuguese release of this PC version by Ecofilmes distributor. Took the chance to scan its manual as soon as I obtained it!)
The Rabbids are getting ready to put into motion the plot that they have been preparing for years. Rayman is having a lovely picnic with the baby Globoxes when the Rabbids suddenly rise up from the ground, kidnap them all and imprison them. Rayman is thrown into an enourmous arena, under the gaze of a hostile crowd of Rabbids. From this day on, and solely for their own amusement, the Rabbids are going to make Rayman go through a series of trials. It is up to you to win them all and free Rayman.
—Manual, Rayman Raving Rabbids

Plot

Rayman and a few baby Globoxes are enjoying a picnic in a forest when three Rabbids erupt from the ground, capturing the baby Globoxes. Rayman tries to offer them food, but then Sergueï comes and grabs Rayman. The Rabbids take Rayman and the baby Globoxes to their Colosseum and hold them in jail cells.

In order to escape, Rayman must collect plungers to build a ladder up to the window so he can jump out. He does this by taking part in trials to entertain the Rabbids. After completing at least 3 of the four daily trials, the final challenge will unlock. Finishing that will reward Rayman with a plunger after which he is taken back to his jail cell to get some rest for the next day's lot of trials. As the days pass, Rayman's cell is decorated to look nicer. In the cell he is able to play music, change costumes and replay previous challenges. If all four challenges are finished in one day he is rewarded with more costumes and songs. After every day, he goes to the ladder of plungers, looking at the window hoping to escape, but a bird always comes and poops on him. After fifteen days, Rayman finally collects enough plungers and escapes, getting his revenge on the annoying bird on the way. Back at the forest, Rayman sees sheep eating the remains of the picnic and remembers he forgot the baby Globoxes. He tries to go back through a hole in which they were captured through but ends up stuck.

Characters

Rayman and the Rabbids are the main characters in the game. Also included are the baby Globoxes, the only returning characters besides Rayman, the Rabbids henchmen, strange creatures that look like a cross between rhinos and elephants and some animals, who only serve as fillers.

The good guys

The Rabbids

  • Clark - Clark is a regular Rabbid that's dressed up to make himself look like Superman. Like Professor Barranco, he appears in several of the minigames Rayman participates in.

Popular culture references

  • Clark the Super Rabbid is a reference to Superman.
  • Rayman's gun that shoots plungers may be a reference to the game Quackshot, where the protagonist also has a gun that shoots plungers.
  • Rayman's Rock 'n' Roll costume references Elvis Presley.
  • The rabbids who act as spies are a reference to Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
  • Most of the songs in the jukebox and the Shake Your Booty! minigames are “Rabbidized” remixes of licensed music.
  • The level Bunnies Think They're In A Movie parodies 1930s Hollywood. In the same level there is a portrait that parodies Abraham Lincoln as a rabbid.
  • In a bonus movie, there is a concept art of a rabbid that resembles Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.
  • In Rayman's jail cell, there is a painting reading "ceci n'est pas une carotte", which is a parody of the famous painting The Treachery of Images by René Magritte.

Gameplay

Rayman in the Colosseum.

When starting up the game, the player will be brought to the game's main menu, where various options can be selected. The names of these options differ among the various ports of this game.

Story mode

During all 15 days Rayman has to move around the Colosseum and complete at least three out of the first four minigames that are present, with the fourth minigame always containing a rhythm game. Once three of the four games are completed, Rayman can go and complete the last game. This game is either a plunger shooting game, a warthog racing game, or a skydiving game (Day 9 only). Once the challenge is completed, Rayman earns a plunger and goes back to his cell. This also marks the end of the day. Once Rayman has completed the third day, he will begin to build a ladder to escape through a window that is within his cell. Each day also has a unique set of minigames.

Rayman can perform various activities in his cell. He can look up at the aforementioned window and try to reach it, though will fail until he obtains enough plungers to climb on. He can also sit on the toilet and replay the minigames that he had already played (with the exceptions of the on-rails shooters, the warthog races, and Bunnies Only Fly Downwards). Along with that, he can also visit the jukebox and listen to specific songs in the game. He can also visit the costume wardrobe and alter his appearance. If Rayman wants to start a new day and play new minigames and earn more plungers, he can go to the large door within his cell to return to the Colosseum and complete the minigames for the new day. The player is unable to start a new day once the 15th day has been completed.

After the 15th day, Rayman uses the plungers that he had previously obtained to complete the ladder and climb up to the window in his cell and escape. This marks the end of the story mode.

The lists of days and their respective minigames can be seen below:

Score mode

Day 1 of story mode must be completed to access this. When selected, the player will be asked to insert their name, followed by a screen that lets them customize the Rayman that they are playing as. Once finished, the player will be brought to a screen that will allow for three extra players to join. When joining, they will also be asked to insert their name and to customize their Rayman. After every player is ready, they can select one of four minigame categories. These minigame categories contain and organize every minigame within the game, some of which contain subcategories and unique modes of specific minigames. The player(s) can then select any minigame of their choice, as long as the minigame has already been completed in the story mode. The minigame categories, subcategories and modes are as follows:

  • Bunny hunt! - Contains the on-rails shooter minigames that are found at the end of most days within the story mode.
    • Round - TBA
      • Survival - Each minigame requires the player to get the highest score that they can get without taking any damage.
      • Scores - Each minigame requires the player to get the highest score that they can get.
      • Time - Each minigame requires the player to win as quickly as they can.
    • Multi - Allows for multiple players to play the bunny hunt minigames together.
      • Versus - TBA
      • Score coop - Each minigame requires the players to work together and get the highest score that they can get.
      • Time coop - Each minigame requires the players to work together and win as quickly as they can.
  • Sports - Contains various minigames that fall under unique subcategories.
    • Workout - Consists of minigames that require significant amounts of physical energy.
    • Precision - Consists of minigames that mainly rely on carefulness and accuracy.
    • Get going! - Consists of the warthog racing minigames that are found at the end of a few days in the story mode, along with Bunnies Only Fly Downwards.
    • Skill - Consists of minigames that mainly rely on practice and being proficient with said minigames.
  • Challenges - Story mode must be completed in order to unlock this. Contains 6 triathlons that are each worth 3,000 points, 4 pentathlons that are each worth 5,000 points, and 3 decathlons that are each worth 10,000 points. Triathlons contain 3 minigames, pentathlons contain 5 minigames, and decathlons contain 10 minigames. The minigames that are within each challenge must be completed in succession, and the player will need to restart the challenge if they want to redo a minigame.
  • Shake your booty! - Contains the rhythm minigames that can be found during each day in the story mode.

Score mode contains its own point tally, where the player can supposedly get a maximum total of 183,000 points. Each minigame is worth 1,000 points, and 75,000 points can be obtained if the player were to get 1,000 points for each of these minigames. 68,000 more points can be obtained through the challenges. The remaining 40,000 points are obtained through the unique modes that are present in bunny hunt. However, it is impossible to obtain 183,000 points due to various minigames being impossible to obtain 1,000 points on. The points that are obtained in score mode will unlock bonuses in the bonus menu.

The minigames that are either borderline or outright impossible to get 1,000 points on include:

Family mode

Exclusive to the PC version of the game. Day 1 of story mode must be completed to access this. Family mode functions similarly to score mode. When selected, the player will be asked to get someone to gather around their computer to play with them. The game will then ask for the player's name and will allow for them to customize Rayman. Afterwards, the player will be brought into the sports category of minigames, where they'll be allowed to play a small amount of minigames from the Workout, Get going! and Skill subcategories, though the Precision subcategory is inaccessible. Each of these minigames have controls that are different from the regular controls. This is so that they can be accustomed to the addition of an extra player.

The available subcategories and minigames can be seen below:

If the player hovers their mouse over an inaccessible minigame, the following message will be displayed at the top of the screen:

Where do you think you're going? Don't you know this game is not available in this mode?

Minigames

In total, there are 75 minigames, some of which have second and third parts. A total of five of these can be played during each day that Rayman is held prisoner at the Colosseum.

Bunny hunts

The bunny hunts are first person on-rails shooter minigame in which Rayman, armed with a plunger gun, has to shoot any Rabbids that he sees and free the baby Globox that they have trapped and not lose all of his health, which can be depleted if either a Rabbid gets too close to him, he gets shot with a plunger, or is attacked by rockets or carrot juice coming from the robots. The plunger gun can carry up to five plungers, and if they are all used, he will have to reload. Rayman is also armed with a grapple chain, which he can use to either ward off plunger attacks or grab a Rabbid that is close and toss it at other Rabbids, earning a multiple score.

Rayman can get extra points by doing specific shots:

  • Good shot - shooting the third Rabbid without reloading - 300 points.
  • Great shot - shooting the fourth Rabbid without reloading - 400 points.
  • Perfect shot - shooting the fifth Rabbid without reloading - 500 points.
  • Bullseye - shooting a Rabbid which is far away.

Several other objects can be shot with plungers, such as radios and bells, which often distract the Rabbids into dancing, and are present in each level once. There are also several boxes which Rayman can break in order to gain power ups or power downs. These are:

  • Extra lives - as the name says, it gives Rayman 3 extra lives.
  • Rapid shot - it gives Rayman the ability to shoot 3 plungers rapidly after each other for a short time. It also automatically reloads when the 3 plungers have been shot, except if the player instantly shoots another plunger.
  • 5X shot - it gives Rayman the ability to shoot all plungers at once for a short time. Needs instant reload after the plungers have been shot.
  • 1000 Points - gives the player 1000 points.
  • Broken Plungers - This power down breaks all plungers for a short time.

Bunnies Have A Soft Spot For Plungers.

The following is a list of the bunny hunts.

Sports

Many of the other minigames are classed as sports, and these fall under the following categories.

Precision

Bunnies Are A-Mazing.

These minigames depend on being careful yet accurate at the same time.

Workout

Bunnies Are Addicted To Carrot Juice.

These minigames take a lot of physical energy to play.

Skill

Bunnies Are Not Ostriches.

The player has to be quick yet also skillful in these minigames.

Get Going!

With the exception of Bunnies Only Fly Downwards, these minigames are races in which Rayman and some other Rabbids and trolls ride on warthogs. The aim is to complete three laps as quickly as possible.

Shake Your Booty!

Bunnies Are Fantastic Dancers.

The player has to make Rayman move to the beat of the song that's playing. The Rabbids that slide towards Rayman will help with timing his movements properly.

Unused minigames

Only consists of one minigame. A minigame that cannot be played during normal gameplay.

Game records

Main article: List of Rayman records

Rayman Raving Rabbids has a score mode, with minigames which unlock as they are completed in the story mode.

Internet connection

At the end of each minigame in score mode, there is an internet code for the player to submit their game score on the now defunct RaymanZone website. Each code was unique to tell which score is the player's on the website listed above. Each minigame page listed the top 3 players in each minigame. Since the release of Rayman Legends, RaymanZone redirects to the official Ubisoft website.

Development

Main article: Rayman Raving Rabbids (cancelled prototype)

After the cancellation of the original Rayman 4, Ubisoft began work on Rayman Raving Rabbids. It was intended to be a free-roaming 3D platformer, contrary to the final party game release. Rayman would have instead had to defeat an army of sinister, zombie-like Rabbids in melee combat, rather than competing in minigames to escape them.

The following is photos that were released during the early development of Rayman Raving Rabbids.
