A Lum is a small body (or shard) of magical energy. Lums are one of the most frequently recurring elements of the Rayman series; their first confirmed appearance is in Rayman 2: The Great Escape. There are many different types of Lums, each with their own unique functions determined by their colour. They usually appear as small lights with insect-like wings, though their appearances can vary widely: some have eyes or faces, some are shaped like rings, and some have a crystalline or metallic appearance. The name Lum is derived from the French word 'lumière', which means 'light'. Most Lums are collectibles, and must be picked up in order to activate their unique effect; however, some Lums are not. The Lums in the Game Boy Advance games often resemble Tings. In Rayman Origins, a new type of Lum appears. These Lums seem to exist outside the colour system used in the previous games, and act as a currency and energy source in the Glade of Dreams.

Types of Lums

• Yellow Lum – the 1,000 Lums which comprise the Heart of the World, and are sometimes scattered across the Glade of Dreams when the Heart is destroyed.
• Super Yellow Lum – five Yellow Lums combined into a single body of energy.
• 1000th Yellow Lum – an elusive Yellow Lum, usually the last in the game to be found.
• Red Lum – restores some health to Rayman.
• Super Red Lum – gives Rayman a new life, offering him an additional chance to restart from the most recent checkpoint.
• Purple Lum – ring-shaped Lums with eyes; Rayman can grab them and swing from them with his magic fist.
• Blue Lum – refills Rayman's oxygen meter when collected underwater; briefly enables flight when collected on dry land.
• Super Blue Lum – enables Rayman to fly freely for the duration of an entire level.
• Light blue Lum – provides Rayman's bumper car with a boost upon collecting three.
• Green Lum – a checkpoint; if Rayman dies, and has some health remaining (aside from Rayman 3D), he reappears where he last collected one.
• White Lum – a checkpoint; serves the same function as a Green Lum.
• Silver Lum – very rare and precious Lum which permanently grants Rayman a new power. In the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3, they grant Rayman a new life.
• Lum (Hall of Doors) – a simple orb of light which acts as a cursor for navigating the Hall of Doors in Rayman 2.
• Lum (Rayman M) – crystalline spheres which are found lying on the ground; these are used as tokens in certain game modes.
• Black Lum (also known as a Dark Lum) – these are Red Lums which have been corrupted and are now malevolent.
• André – the leader of the Black Lums; more intelligent than the others, and capable of converting Red Lums to Black Lums by touching them.
• Hoodlum – a Black Lum in a sackcloth suit; these are enemies capable of wielding weapons.
• Lum (Rayman Kart) – these resemble piles of gold coins; there are roughly two million of them.
• Lum (UbiArt games) – these Lums exist outside the colour system of the other games, where they serve mainly as a currency and power source; if they are red or purple, they are worth double.
• Lum King – an oversized Lum found in Rayman Origins; when collected, it causes nearby Lums to turn red, temporarily increasing their value.
