Carmen the Whale is a character from the Rayman 2 games. In every version, Carmen's first appearance was on the Main Menu, making her the first main character to appear in the game, even before Rayman. Carmen's home is in the ocean, though she occasionally makes trips to Whale Bay. Carmen has been witnessed having a taste for the thorny roots common in the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava. Carmen the whale's main job in life is to survey the depths of the ocean, depositing air bubbles to help any stray plants and animals, and in this case also Rayman. Piranhas are very fond of her air bubbles, since they suffer from heartburn.

Roles in Rayman 2

Carmen was a prisoner held in Whale Bay by the Robo-Pirates, who were intending to take blubber from her and use it to grease their engines. In return for being rescued by Rayman, Carmen would help him to stay underwater for longer periods provided he followed her and breathed in the air bubbles she produced. In the PlayStation version of Rayman 2, Carmen led Rayman to the Sanctuary of Water and Ice; in all other versions, she leads him to the end of the level.

In Rayman 2: Revolution

In Rayman 2: Revolution, Carmen makes an additional appearance following Whale Bay in the ocean outside the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire. The rescue of Globox and Carmen is required to access the Sanctuary, as Carmen must eat the thorny root blocking the entrance.

Following her oceanic appearance, Carmen appears every now and then if Rayman returns to the area outside of the sanctuary.

Rayman rides Carmen in one of the loading animations in the game; this is the only loading animation that is not present anywhere else in the game, possibly meaning that Rayman may have originally been going to ride Carmen.
