Land of the Livid Dead (UbiArt games)
- This article is about the world in the UbiArt games. For the level in Rayman 3, see the Land of the Livid Dead (Rayman 3). For the level in Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge, see Land of the Livid Dead (Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge).
The Land of the Livid Dead is the optional final world in Rayman Origins, and a location that also features in Rayman Jungle Run, Rayman Legends, Rayman Fiesta Run and Rayman Adventures. It is a subterranean realm filled with graveyard-like structures, hazardous obstacles and dangerous creatures. Its relationship to the eponymous level in Rayman 3 is unknown.
Description
In stark contrast to its identically named counterpart from Rayman 3, the Land of the Livid Dead in the UbiArt games is entirely subterranean, exuding a morbid, cemetery-like atmosphere reminiscent of the Tomb of the Ancients from Rayman 2.
Graveyard-like structures dot the landscape, interspersed with natural rock formations and pools of poisonous fluids. Some areas resemble a subterranean city, with towering structures reminiscent of skyscrapers in the background, connected by bridges. These structures appear to be made of sepulchres piled endlessly upon each other. Most are shrouded in darkness, but some have yellow or blue lights in their windows. Similar small mausoleums can be seen alongside the paths the heroes traverse, bearing symbols resembling the heads of enemies encountered elsewhere in the game, such as Lividstones and stone men. In other sections, the most common structures are towers seemingly made entirely of blackish tombstones. Some have flat, gray stone lids, while others seem to continue infinitely upwards, like the piles of sepulchres. Some even have large stone tentacles protruding from them. Stone coffins are plentiful and often serve as platforms.
The area presents numerous hazards to navigate, including grannies, spiky Darktoons, beds of tulips obstructing the paths, Darkroots, buzzsaws, flamethrowers, fire projectiles, pools of toxic purple liquid and bottomless pits. The Snake of the Dead can also be found here.

The Land of the Livid Dead is the optional final world in Rayman Origins, situated beneath the Snoring Tree. To gain access, the heroes must collect all ten Skull Teeth and present them to Mister Death, who guards the entrance. It is intended to be the most difficult challenge in the game and features precison platforming throughout. Some levels are designed so that player actions are synchronized with the music, a concept that was further developed in Rayman Legends with the musical levels.
Uniquely, it is represented as a single entry point on the world map, despite being internally divided into two distinct levels. The initial four sections are collectively identified as Don't Trample the Flowers within the game's files, although this name is not displayed to the player. The fifth and final section, the Mamma of All Nightmares, culminates in a confrontation with the game's final boss, Big Mama. Defeating her triggers the ending credits sequence once again.
Beating the level in the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions unlocks the hidden trophy/achievement Nothing Lasts Forever.

In Rayman Jungle Run
In Rayman Jungle Run, seven levels are set in the Land of the Livid Dead, one for each world. To unlock one of these levels, the player must have collected five Skull Teeth in the normal levels of the corresponding world, which can only be obtained by collecting all 100 Lums in a level. Levels set in the Land of the Livid Dead do not contain any Lums. They do, however, save the player's record time and display it on the level selection screen. Some of these levels feature multiple paths that can be taken.

In Rayman Legends

In Rayman Legends, the second and final level of the Land of the Livid Dead, the Mamma of All Nightmares, appears in the Mystical Pique painting in the Back to Origins mode.
Additionally, several of the new levels in this game take place in the Land of the Livid Dead. This includes the two rescue missions in Fiesta de los Muertos, Run for your Life and Sprint for your Life, as well as the final musical level, Grannies World Tour. The Land of the Livid Dead is also one of the settings for the Online Challenges, and elements from this world appear in the level How to Shoot your Dragon.
Grannies no longer appear as enemies in this world, and toads can sometimes be found instead. Eyebumpers have been replaced with the bouncing skulls from Fiesta de los Muertos, and new elongated structures with snake heads appear for the first time.

In Rayman Fiesta Run, levels featuring the Land of the Livid Dead are similar to their counterparts from Rayman Jungle Run, where the heroes merely need to reach the end of the level as quickly as possible. These levels are unlocked by accumulating Teensies, which are gained by collecting Lums from the normal levels in the game.
The official website for the game refers to this world as the Land of the Livid Dead Island,[1] suggesting that it is indeed located on an island. However, no such indications are found in the game, hinting that the idea may have been scrapped or that the terminology is purely metaphorical. Additionally, the mention of the island is present across all languages, except German.

In Rayman Adventures
In Rayman Adventures, the Land of the Livid Dead appeared during the Marathon Challenges. It was first introduced during the Summer Marathon event and has since appeared in mini-marathons and other events. It reuses several areas and assets from Rayman Legends, as well as some from other areas of the game. New here is the presence of Devilbobs, which are the only enemies to have appeared in these challenges.
Unused level
The game also features an unused level set in the Land of the Livid Dead, in which the heroes must dodge fire and defeat Devilbobs to reach the Captain at the end. While this could have been a test for the Marathon Challenges, it may have the case that the Land of the Livid Dead was intended to have its own set of levels and be accessible from the world map. Its presence on an early version of the world map strengthens the latter possibility.

Trivia
- Like the other identically named locations, its name is a pun on the 1968 horror film Night of the Living Dead.
