Two early black lums

A Black Lum, also known as a Dark Lum, is a type of evil Lum that was first introduced in Rayman 3. It is the result of a Red Lum that had been frightened. Unlike the other Lums in Rayman's world, these do not shine, hence their name, and instead look like hairy insects with large bloodshot eyes and grey lips. André, the leader of the Black Lums, is the only one that has a pair of arms. When several Black Lums gather into a swarm, they steal the fur from animals like Bontons and weave it into costumes for themselves, thus becoming Hoodlums. In the main version of Rayman 3, the Black Lum controlling a Hoodlum flees when Rayman defeats the Hoodlum; in the handheld version of the game, Black Lums appear as direct enemies which can be defeated in one hit from Rayman's fist; in this version, Admiral Razorbeard seeks to capture Globox so that he can take control of the power of André, whom Globox has swallowed. Once Rayman receives his grimace power from Gumsi, he can use it to convert Black Lums back into Red Lums (assuming that he uses the grimace on them quickly after defeating their Hoodlums, while they are still stunned and before they get a chance to fly away). They are known to like humid, damp areas, particularily swamps, and dislike music.

A small number of Black Lums appear in the portable adaptations of Rayman 3. Despite its title, this game is based mainly on Rayman 2 – the presence of Black Lums is one of its few reminders of the original Rayman 3. In this game, they act as enemies, rushing towards Rayman and damaging him by contact. If Rayman hits them with his telescopic fist, they splatter – the same thing happens to the caterpillars in this game. The only remnants of the destroyed Black Lums is their eyes – the same result occurs when Rayman kills Antitoons in the other games.

Black Lums are visually very similar to the baby caterpillars which appear in Rayman 2.

A small number of Black Lums are found in the handheld Rayman 3.
When they are defeated, only their eyes remain.
