Bad Rayman is an evil duplicate of Rayman. In one of the final stages of the original game (and its handheld adaptation), Mr Dark uses his magic to create Bad Rayman for the sole purpose of destroying his original counterpart. He can only be defeated by finishing the level. Bad Rayman returns in Rayman Origins, where he is a playable character.

Bad Rayman is referred to as Rayman's Wicked Double in Rayman Junior, Dark Rayman in Rayman Advance and DarkRay in Rayman Origins. Rayman Arena features an unlockable skin named Dark Rayman, but this character bears little resemblance to Bad Rayman, despite being based on the same concept.

Character description

Bad Rayman's skin is grey, his hair and neckerchief are pink, he wears a dark blue shirt which still has the ring, and his shoes and gloves are also blue. He also has glowing yellow eyes with no pupils. He also has a green tongue, which can be noticed by having him make a grimace in Rayman Designer or Rayman Junior. In Rayman Origins, his original colouration is mostly preserved, but his hood is blue, and his skin, hair and tounge are purple.

He first appears at a very late point in all versions of Rayman except for the Atari Jaguar version, when the real Rayman finally reaches the second part of Mr Dark's Dare in Candy Château, and has a spell cast upon him by Mr Dark. The evil double appears behind him, and follows him wherever he goes as well as copying his actions. Rayman cannot stand still for too long at this point, because he and the double will die instantly if they come to close contact with each other. However, Bad Rayman will die as soon as the real Rayman reaches the exit in the area.

In Rayman Advance, Bad Rayman is called Dark Rayman, which has fuelled numerous debates on his real name, and the nature of the relationship between the two.

Rayman Junior

In the educational versions of the game, Bad Rayman appears in the penultimate level, tasty chase. Betilla refers to him as Rayman's "Wicked Double". However, he does not chase Rayman during the whole level, but only makes short appearances and disappears after a certain distance.

Bad Rayman also makes appearances in the Game Boy Color version of the game, in which he appears in a slightly different colour scheme; his shoes and gloves are yellow, and his skin is darker than Rayman's. He is found at the end of the game, in Arcane Forest. Bad Rayman behaves in the same way as he did in the original game - chasing, copying, and causing death upon touch.

Rayman Origins

Bad Rayman makes a return in Rayman Origins as a playable character. The Bubble Dreamer nicknames him DarkRay and makes fun of his ugliness. He also mentions that he was created by Mr Dark, being the only overt reference to the antagonist from the original Rayman in the whole game. To unlock him, 220 Electoons are required. His colour scheme is slightly different than in the original game, with a cyan hood, purple skin, and darker hair. It can be noted that his voice sounds exactly like Rayman's.
