Take a vessel and only come back with his dead body!

The Precipice is a location in Rayman 2, notable for having similar gameplay to the Bayou. It was originally called "The Great Rift".[1]

Phase 1

This level takes place in a wide canyon, where Rayman is being pursued by the Robo-Pirates shooting helicopter bombs and red walking shells at him. He has to escape them by running across a weak pier, climbing on nets, and jump whenever bits of it are blasted off.

Phase 2

Rayman enters a cave and follows another wooden pier, which leads him to a tower the pirates built that sinks under rising water (reminiscent to the flooding levels in the original Rayman game), while helicopter bombs and rolling kegs try to slow him down.

Developer Arnaud Guyon revealed that this phase was inspired by the 1987 game Nebulus.[2]

Phase 3

Rayman comes out somewhere else in the canyon, and is still in pursuit across wooden piers. There is then a cave with a bottomless pit, which Rayman has to glide through until he lands on another pier. At the end of this, he ends up on a pirate stronghold which was built over a cliff, still under attack by a Ninja Henchman and helicopter bombs. Notably, these bombs can hit the Ninja Henchman, inflicting him 5 damage (one third of its resistance). Once the pirate is defeated, Rayman can exit after freeing the Teensie.

One of the game's six Glob Crystals is found hidden at the very end of the Precipice. For every two Glob Crystals collected, a new minigame becomes accessible from the Globox Village.

The level is identical to the original, except there are more Yellow Lums to be collected.

This version plays out as part of a large mission to destroy 2 generators to enter the Lava Sanctuary. It has had many alterations made, based around the fact that it now has 4 phases. Phase 2 has been removed and now features as phase 1 of the Echoing Caves. Phase 3 has become phase 2 accordingly, but the level now features phases 2 and 3 of the original Echoing Caves as phases 3 and 4, concluding with a Ninja Henchman battle as the player attempts to destroy the generator.

In Rayman 2 Forever, the Precipice directly follows the Echoing Caves, and it also features warships, though they don't move at all. It is also the only time that Rayman fights a pirate, aside from the final battle.
