Spiky snakes[1] are enemies which appear in Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, Rayman Fiesta Run and Rayman Mini.

Description

There are five types of spiky snakes. While their appearance is different, they share common characteristics such as an elongated body covered in spikes. They resemble insects more than snakes.

Appearances

Rayman Origins

In Rayman Origins, two types of spiky snakes are found in Snake Eyes and Don't Shoot the DJ, two levels of the Grumbling Grottos. The purple ones are invincible, while the red ones are vulnerable and have wings. Defeating them takes as many mosquito shots as their number of body segments.

Rayman Legends

In Rayman Legends, two other types of spiky snakes appear.

There are the spiky snakes from Fiesta de los Muertos, which are red and purple, with black eyes and double pincers in their mouth. They are found in Snakes on a Cake, Lucha Libre Get Away, Mariachi Madness and many invaded levels.

The other type is the spiky snakes from Olympus Maximus, which are red. There are only two of them and both are found in the Amazing Maze.

In the Back to Origins levels, the spiky snakes from Rayman Origins are also encountered. While their behavior remains unchanged, their appearance is slightly different: the wings of the red spiky snakes are more clear, and the purple ones have wings too.

Rayman Fiesta Run

In Rayman Fiesta Run, the red spiky snakes from Rayman Origins make a return in "Cater-plane!", a level of the Candy World.

Rayman Mini

In Rayman Mini, tiny spiky snakes appear in the Rabbit Hole and the level "Caterp-Hell-Art" of the Bonus world. From version 1.3.0 onwards, they are also found in "Concerto in Punch Major", the music level set in the Rabbit Hole.

They resemble those from Fiesta de los Muertos, but their bodies are covered in a green carapace with red dots. Their spikes are red, much more numerous and look like thorns. On their head, they have four black eyes without irises or pupils, different from those in Rayman Legends, and two huge red mandibles. This is the game where they look the most like insects.

Rayman: The Board Game

Spiky snakes could appear in Rayman: The Board Game. If enough people vote for them over the spiky flowers, their Fiesta de los Muertos appearance will be added as obstacles for said world.

Early development

The game files of Rayman Legends contain the original paintings for the musical levels. On the one for Mariachi Madness, a spiky snake from Olympus Maximus can be seen, but purple in color. This type of enemy was eventually removed from the level and the rest of the game.
