Mad drummers[1] are uncommon enemies found in Band Land. There are only two in the whole of the original Rayman game, and they do not appear at all in Maths and English with Rayman or Rayman Designer.

They are huge and invincible enemies, but in spite of their characteristics, they are less dangerous than they appear to be. Almost static, except for a few steps that they regularly take, their attacks consist in hitting the floor with their maces, which creates lightning bolts, and waving them, which Rayman must watch out for if he tries to pass above them.

Their amazing size can be a disadvantage for them though, as it is possible to sneak between their body and their feet, with the help of a moving cloud.

Unused boss behavior

It is likely this enemy was initially meant to be a boss Rayman has to fight in the last part of Bongo Hills. The game's save data has an unused flag for defeating a boss in this part of the level, and thus skipping it on replays, and the enemy himself has functionality to be defeated. In the game his health is set to 200 and he will lose some each time he is hit in the face. He is vulnerable to attacks when he moves his drumsticks down from his face so that they are no longer blocking the hit. Since his boss behavior is unused, he however can't easily be defeated in the final release as the game will attempt to prevent his health from reaching 0 unless defeated during the last frame of his animation. Once defeated, the level will finish without a victory dance.

Notes

  1. The name is a translation of French "batteur fou", found in the game files. Before this discovery, they were referred to as red drummers or red monsters.
