Bad Rayman, also known as Dark Rayman, is an enemy which appears in the original Rayman game, its Game Boy Color remake, its Game Boy Advance port, in Maths and English with Rayman and in Rayman Designer.

Description

Bad Rayman is a clone of Rayman, magically created by Mr Dark in an attempt to destroy the original.

His appearance is very similar to that of Rayman, but with different colouration. He seems to have somehow inherited Mr Dark's glowing yellow eyes. In the original Rayman game, Bad Rayman's skin is grey, his hair and neckerchief are pink, his gloves are light blue, and his shirt and shoes are dark blue. He also has a green tongue, which can be noticed by having him make a grimace in Maths and English with Rayman or Rayman Designer.

In the original Rayman

Bad Rayman first appears at a very late point in all versions of the original Rayman game except for the Atari Jaguar version, when the real Rayman finally reaches the second part of Mr Dark's Dare in Candy Château, and has a spell cast upon him by Mr Dark. The evil double appears behind him, and follows him wherever he goes as well as copying his actions. Rayman cannot stand still for too long at this point, because he and the double will die instantly if they come to close contact with each other. However, Bad Rayman will die as soon as the real Rayman reaches the exit in the area.

In Rayman Advance, Bad Rayman is called Dark Rayman, which has fueled numerous debates on his real name, and the nature of the relationship between him and the many other identically named characters.[1]

Bad Rayman's fist

In the PlayStation version of the game, Bad Rayman can throw his fist while copying Rayman's actions. Unlike Bad Rayman's body, the fist is not recoloured, but instead looks exactly like Rayman's did when it was thrown, reflecting Golden Fist and/or Speed Fist power-ups. This copy of the fist should also have appeared in the PC version, but due to a programming error,[2] it remains inactive and invisible.

Unlike Bad Rayman himself, his fist is harmless to Rayman, as it passes right through him. However, it was intended during the game's development to kill Rayman if it came into contact with him.[3] It is unknown whether this behaviour was intentionally disabled for gameplay reasons, or just never fully implemented due to lack of time or other technical issues.

In Rayman Junior

In Maths and English with Rayman, Bad Rayman appears in the penultimate level, Tasty Chase. Betilla the Fairy refers to him as Rayman's Wicked Double. However, he does not chase Rayman during the whole level, but only makes short appearances and disappears after a certain distance.

In the Game Boy Color version of Rayman

Bad Rayman in the Game Boy Color version of Rayman

Bad Rayman also makes appearances in the Game Boy Color version of Rayman, in which he appears in a slightly different colour scheme; his shoes and gloves are yellow, and his skin is darker than Rayman's. He is found towards the end of the game, in the Arcane Forest. Bad Rayman behaves in the same way as he did in the original game - chasing, copying, and causing death upon touch. But he doesn't die if he manages to kill Rayman, apart if the hero falls into a chasm.

When Rayman reaches the exit in the area, Bad Rayman doesn't disappear, unlike in the original game. And as he is never seen again in the game, his fate remains unknown.

It is possible to kill Bad Rayman in this game, by flying above a specific floor of red spikes.

In a screenshot from the manual showing an early version of the game, Bad Rayman is shown to originally have been of a different color.

Trivia

  • Bad Rayman's coloration suggests he inspired Raymesis, a playable character in Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, and their spin-offs. Similarities include glowing yellow eyes, purple hair, blue shoes and blue clothing. Differences include a pink neckerchief rather than a turquoise hoodie and gray skin rather than purple skin.

Notes and references

  1. Rayman Pirate-Community discussion forums, Dark Rayman & Bad Rayman, http://www.raymanpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=5283
  2. The PC port of the engine added a function named add_alwobj, which must be called on objects like the telescopic fist to add them to the list of "level objects". The code which manages Bad Rayman's fist was not updated in the PC port to include this new function call, rendering it ineffective.
  3. This can be seen by decompiling the game's code and inspecting the main object function table: Bad Rayman and his fist have the same collision function, DoBlKRayRaymanCollision. The collision code for the fist is never executed, as the necessary flag to enable collision with Rayman is turned off in the fist's animation state (état).
