Bad Rayman is an evil clone of Rayman. In one of the final stages of the original game, Mr Dark uses his magic to create Bad Rayman for the sole purpose of destroying his original counterpart. He can only be defeated by finishing the level.

Bad Rayman, named Dark Rayman, makes a return as an antagonist in Rayman Legends, and acts as he did in the original game. He appears in the last Invasion levels, in which Rayman, in addition to having to reach a group of Teensies before a certain amount of time while defeating enemies from another world and avoiding obstacles, must also avoid contact with Bad Rayman, who follows him and repeats his moves. This makes these levels some of the most challenging in the game. Bad Rayman's appearance is different from that of the previous games, as he is now almost completely dark with a purple aura emanating from his body. At certain points, Bad Rayman's crazy evil laughter can be heard, revealing a high pitched, echoed version of Rayman's voice. This laughter, along with other variable noises, can be heard at the beginning of the challenge or when Rayman is defeated.

Bad Rayman was intended to appear in Phoenix Interactive's cancelled Rayman 4 project. One piece of concept art produced for the game shows Rayman standing in an enormous cathedral-like building, which is decorated with statues and stained-glass windows in the likeness of Bad Rayman. These depictions show Bad Rayman holding swords, carrying spears, wearing suits of armour and breathing fire. Here he appears to be mainly black in colour, and his eyes are red rather than yellow. Engravings on the walls mention the name 'Dark Rayman'. The artwork seems to imply that Bad Rayman would have been an enemy in the game – possibly a boss, or even the main villain.

Bad Rayman, also known as Dark Rayman, is an enemy who appears in the original Rayman game, its Game Boy Color remake, Maths and English with Rayman, Rayman Designer and French with Rayman.

Description

Bad Rayman is a clone of Rayman, magically created by Mr Dark in an attempt to destroy the original.

His appearance is very similar to that of Rayman, but with different colouration. He seems to have somehow inherited Mr Dark's glowing yellow eyes. In the original Rayman game, Bad Rayman's skin is grey, his hair and neckerchief are pink, his gloves are light blue, and his shirt and shoes are dark blue. He also has a green tongue, which can be noticed by having him make a grimace in Maths and English with Rayman or Rayman Designer.

Appearances

Rayman

Bad Rayman first appears at a very late point in all versions of the original Rayman game except for the Atari Jaguar version, when the real Rayman finally reaches the second part of Mr Dark's Dare in Candy Château, and has a spell cast upon him by Mr Dark. The evil double appears behind him, and follows him wherever he goes as well as copying his actions. Rayman cannot stand still for too long at this point, because he and the double will die instantly if they come to close contact with each other. However, Bad Rayman will die as soon as the real Rayman reaches the exit in the area.

Bad Rayman, who is not named in the original versions of the game, but only in the manual for Maths and English with Rayman, in Rayman Designer, in the achievements for Rayman Classic and in the original soundtrack for Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition, is also called Dark Rayman in Rayman Advance, Rayman for the Nintendo DSi and the original soundtrack for the 30th anniversary edition, which has fueled numerous debates on his real name, and the nature of the relationship between him and the many other identically named characters.[1]

Bad Rayman's fist

In the PlayStation version of the game, Bad Rayman can throw his fist while copying Rayman's actions. Unlike Bad Rayman's body, the fist is not recoloured, but instead looks exactly like Rayman's did when it was thrown, reflecting Golden Fist and/or Speed Fist power-ups. This copy of the fist should also have appeared in the PC version, but due to a programming error,[2] it remains inactive and invisible.

Unlike Bad Rayman himself, his fist is harmless to Rayman, as it passes right through him. However, it was intended during the game's development to kill Rayman if it came into contact with him.[3] It is unknown whether this behaviour was intentionally disabled for gameplay reasons, or just never fully implemented due to lack of time or other technical issues.

Maths and English with Rayman

Rayman's «evil double» haunts the world of the cakes. He constantly pursues Rayman through this world. Rayman must be extra careful because if Bad Rayman touches him, it's fatal!
We're not far from Dark's lair now, and we're beginning to feel the poisonous effects of his evil spirit. Rayman, be careful not to stand still for too long among the cakes and candies, for a wicked double of yourself is following you. Don't let him catch you. Be alert and be clever. Good luck.

In Maths and English with Rayman and the other games in this educational series, Bad Rayman appears in the penultimate level, Tasty chase, which takes place in Candy Château. However, he does not chase Rayman during the whole level, but only makes short appearances and disappears after a certain distance.

Bad Rayman is named in the manual, and in-game, Betilla the fairy refers to him as Rayman's "wicked double".

Rayman Designer

In Rayman Designer, Bad Rayman appears as an enemy event and can be added to the maps in Candy Château. He will disappear if Rayman comes into contact with an anti-spell amulet.

 • Bad Rayman - An evil twin of Rayman that follows him at a regular interval and makes the same movements as he does.

French with Rayman

In French with Rayman and the other games in this educational series, Bad Rayman appears in the level Food and Drinks of Candy Château. Like in Maths and English with Rayman, he only makes short appearances and disappears after a certain distance.

The Game Boy Color version of Rayman

Watch out! Mr. Dark has conjured a dark version of yourself! It doesn't seem friendly: I wouldn't try shaking hands with it...

Bad Rayman also makes appearances in the Game Boy Color version of Rayman, in which he appears in a slightly different colour scheme; his shoes and gloves are yellow, and his skin is darker than Rayman's. He is found towards the end of the game, in the Arcane Forest. Bad Rayman behaves in the same way as he did in the original game - chasing, copying, and causing death upon touch. But he doesn't die if he manages to kill Rayman, apart if the hero falls into a chasm.

When Rayman reaches the exit in the area, Bad Rayman doesn't disappear, unlike in the original game. And as he is never seen again in the game, his fate remains unknown.

It is possible to kill Bad Rayman in this game, by flying above a specific floor of red spikes.

In a screenshot from the manual showing an early version of the game, Bad Rayman is shown to originally have been of a different color.

Links to other characters

Bad Rayman's coloration suggests he inspired Raymesis, a playable character in Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, and their spin-offs. Similarities include glowing yellow eyes, purple hair, blue shoes and blue clothing. Differences include a pink neckerchief rather than a turquoise hoodie and gray skin rather than purple skin.

Notes and references

 1. Rayman Pirate-Community discussion forums, Dark Rayman & Bad Rayman, https://raymanpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=5283
 2. The PC port of the engine added a function named add_alwobj, which must be called on objects like the telescopic fist to add them to the list of "level objects". The code which manages Bad Rayman's fist was not updated in the PC port to include this new function call, rendering it ineffective.
 3. This can be seen by decompiling the game's code and inspecting the main object function table: Bad Rayman and his fist have the same collision function, DoBlKRayRaymanCollision. The collision code for the fist is never executed, as the necessary flag to enable collision with Rayman is turned off in the fist's animation state (état).
